Over the first seven months of the Trump presidency, it seemed as if the President and Republicans would never agree to anything. Whether it was healthcare, in which the GOP seemed to be in conflict, or any number of the President’s executive orders, which even some Republicans criticized, the White House and Capital Hill appeared to have been in chaos.
The month of September seems to be be going in another direction, however, as the President seems to be cozying up with Democratic leaders in the House and the Senate, leaving Republicans floundering in disbelief. Earlier this month Trump agreed to a deal with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer regarding the nation’s debt limit, while Pelosi was even accused of dictating one of the President’s tweets to him prior to it being posted. Then just this week the President met once more with the two Democrats and appeared to have reached a tentative deal on DACA and his plan for a border wall.
Democrats seem to be having better legislative luck with Trump than Republicans have had, and just yesterday a hot mic recording on the Senate floor showed us all just how close Chuck Schumer and Democrats may actually be with President Trump.
“He likes us. He likes me anyway,” Senator Chuck Schumer said. “Here’s what I told him. I said, ‘Mr. President, you’re much better off if you can sometimes step right and sometimes step left. If you have to step just in one direction, you’re boxed.'”
Republicans have to be furious over just how close the New York Senator has been able to get to Trump over the last several weeks. While Schumer and Trump may have different political ideologies, there is no denying that Schumer’s New York personality appeals to the President, while Republicans are having a hard time breaking through to Trump.
