Walt Disney Co (DIS) Postpones Release of “Star Wars: Episode VIII” by More Than 6 Months

Shares of Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) are trading up today despite the bad news that the company will be delaying the release of their next Star Wars film, “Star Wars: Episode VIII”. The news came yesterday when the company announced that the film will likely debut approximately two years after the most recent movie, December 15, 2017. Originally Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) had planned on debuting the next Star Wars film on May 26, 2017, but for unkown reasons they apparently will need more time for filming, which begins next month.

The rise in share price is likely not related to this news, but instead a bounce back after the stock had been pushed down consistently over the last six weeks. In fact just yesterday Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) shares hit new 52-week lows of $90. The stock traded as high as $122.08 back in August of last year. The stock is up 0.43% or $0.4 following the news, hitting $92.94 per share. About 832,930 shares traded hands. DIS has declined 16.68% since June 16, 2015 and is downtrending. It has underperformed the S&P500 by 7.81%.
