We all knew that the protests in Hamburg, Germany for the G20 Summit were going to be large and very heated. We just didn’t know that such protests would literally trap the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, inside her hotel, but that’s exactly what is taking place right now.
According to German officials, anti-capitalist protests have rocked the city, with many of the streets leading to the venue of the G20 Summit being blocked. In fact the protests have become so severe that fireworks were being shot off towards police helicopters. Melania Trump is expected to attend an event held by Angela Merkel’s husband, Joachim Sauer, for the spouses of the leaders. However, protesters are currently preventing her from leaving the hotel she’s staying at.
A spokesman for the First Lady said: “We have not received the all-clear from police to leave the residence. “We have no security clearance from the police to leave the guesthouse.”
More than 100,000 protesters have filled the streets of Hamburg, torching cars, taking down signs and barricades, and even slashing the tires of a car in the Canadian delegation. Hamburg prepared for large protests, deploying approximately 15,000 police within the city. However, things remain quite out of hand, we are told. Whether Melania Trump will be able to make the event for the spouses is yet to be seen, as police move water cannons into areas in order to try and disperse protesters.
President Trump is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin later this evening as well, which will certainly be something the media will be focusing on as the evening progresses.
