Yesterday Senator Bob Corker, from Tennessee, placed himself in the national spotlight with a single tweet. Following the President’s attack on him via Twitter yesterday morning, the veteran Republican Senator fired back with an insulting tweet of his own.
“It’s a shame the White House has become an adult day care center. Someone obviously missed their shift this morning,” Corker tweeted just before noon yesterday.
The tweet, which has been retweeted over 127,000 times and liked over 350,000 times, sent shockwaves through the Republican party. And while just as many Republicans were literally hiding from the press, Senator Corker spoke to the press himself, further dividing the party.
“He concerns me,” Corker told the New York Times. “He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation.”
The senator then went on to express his worry that the President’s threats to other countries could put the U.S. “on the path to World War III.”
This was clearly referencing other tweets that Trump made, both Saturday and a few weeks ago, with vague messages towards North Korea and their leader Kim Jong-un.
“Presidents and their administrations have been talking to North Korea for 25 years, agreements made and massive amounts of money paid hasn’t worked, agreements violated before the ink was dry, makings fools of U.S. negotiators. Sorry, but only one thing will work!” Trump’s tweet read.
Many Democrats, as well as political pundits on both sides of the isle, have attacked Trump for his threatening tweets. Meanwhile, he has undermined his top diplomat, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on multiple occasions. It will be interesting to see what happens should North Korea test fire another missile. Will the President respond with force, risking escalation, or will he simply just tweet out another threat?
