Following former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee under oath yesterday, many political pundits, politicians and media personalities have been suggesting that president Trump should testify under oath refuting Comey’s claims if he is so confident of his side of the story.
Up until this point in time, Trump, nor his administration, have commented on whether or not the President is willing to testify under oath in order to refute some of Comey’s most damaging comments. This includes Trump’s alleged loyalty pledge, his requests regarding the Michael Flynn investigation and his comments made in which he claimed Comey was the one to request the dinner meeting which took place back in February.
This afternoon, however, during a joint press conference held at the White House with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, a reporter asked Trump this exact question: “So [James Comey] said those things under oath, would you be willing to speak under oath to give your version of those events?”
Trump swiftly replied, “one hundred percent!”
Trump then quickly began mincing words, suggesting that he would never have asked Comey for his loyalty under oath, which made absolutely no sense given the question at hand. Trump said, “I didn’t say under oath, I hardly know the man. Who would ask a man to pledge allegiance under oath?”
The ramblings were pretty much unintelligible, as the President seemed to confuse, or at least pretend to confuse two separate issues, that of Comey’s statements made yesterday under oath, which were quite damning to the President, and that of the dinner meeting which took place where Trump allegedly made such requests and statements. Note that the dinner meetings between the President and the former FBI Director were not under oath…… obviously…
