“A democracy which alienates and delegitimizes the free press it is not a democracy at all.”
This is a quote which sounds like something one of our forefathers such as Thomas Jefferson or Benjamin Franklin would have said, but no, it’s simply a quote from a no-name journalist like myself. I have to admit that I’m an avid follower of President Trump’s Twitter account @RealDonaldTrump, not for the insightful information provided, like with his predecessor’s tweets, but for the entertainment and readiness for an all out Constitutional crisis that it affords me.
On Tuesday, I noticed that the President had mentioned ‘Fake News” in two tweets during the early morning hours and my blood pressure spiked once again, like it always does when I realize that this man is abusing his power to prop himself up at our nation’s expense. The two tweets read as follows:
“The Fake News Media has never been so wrong or so dirty. Purposely incorrect stories and phony sources to meet their agenda of hate. Sad!”
“Fake News is at an all time high. Where is their apology to me for all of the incorrect stories???”
These tweets made me wonder just how often our 45th President mentions “fake news” or “fake media”. Thus I decided to count each time he has demeaned our free press since taking office 146 days ago. My findings were quite remarkable.
Since January 20th, President Trump has tweeted 63 times about “fake news” or “fake media”. This averages out to approximately one such tweet every 2.3 days as President. In total, Trump has tweeted 745 times since inauguration, meaning that approximately 8.5% of all of his tweets as President have included one phrase or the other.
Our nation has been built on the First Amendment and the freedoms afforded to our media to report in an open and free manner. It is what differentiates us from authoritative regimes and dictatorships which feed propaganda to their citizens in order to exude further control over them. For the President of the United States to lash out at our press, even if on the rare occasion he may be right, it is simply a national tragedy. Below you will find a complete list of all 63 of these tweets:
