Up until this point in time, many on the right, and even some of those the left, have said, “show us the proof that the Trump Campaign colluded with Russia in order to defeat Hillary Clinton.”
While a series of dozens of links between campaign officials and Russia have existed, and many within Trump’s campaign have seemingly been acting as guilty as they possibly can, that proof did not exist in the public spectrum.
That’s until last night, when the New York Times released a followup story about the Trump Jr. meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya. In the story, according to three separate sources, Trump Jr. had received an email from Rob Goldstone, who is a publicist and former British tabloid reporter who had helped set up the meeting. The email sent to Trump’s son made it clear that the topic of discussion at the forthcoming meeting would be damaging information pertaining to the DNC and Hillary Clinton and it was ‘part of a Russian government effort to aid Donald J. Trump’s candidacy.’
If this story is accurate, which we have no reason to believe the contrary, that would mean that Trump Jr. has lied to the American people when he claimed that he had no idea who he was meeting with or what the meeting would be about. Additionally, this is the first time that at least an attempt of collusion has been shown by anyone within the Trump Administration. Note that both Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner also attended this meeting last June.
While it is certainly possible that candidate Trump did not know this meeting would take place, it is highly unlikely that three of the higher up officials within his campaign attended, while Trump himself didn’t know what was going on. Trump Jr. has just hired an attorney as the media, and likely the Mueller investigation, will certainly be hounding him over these allegations in the many days, weeks and months to follow.
