As we learn more and more about the meeting that Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner had with Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya, we get a much clearer picture as to just how obsessed the Trump campaign seemed to have been about dirt on the DNC and Hillary Clinton.
In an interview on NBC’s ‘Today’ show, Natalia Veselnitskaya discussed the meeting and the circumstances leading up to it, in further detail. According to Veselnitskaya, she did not have any dirt on either the DNC or Clinton, and claims she doesn’t have any ties to the Russian government. When asked, however, why Kushner, Manafort and Trump Jr. would be under the impression that she did have such information, she explained:
“It’s quite possible that maybe they were longing for such information. They wanted it so badly.”
While the story portrayed by Trump Jr. has changed multiple times since the New York Times began to trickle out details of the meeting, one thing seems clear and that’s the fact that the Trump campaign was craving any information which would be destructive to their opponents, even if that information came from a hostile foreign power such as Russia. Whether you believe Veselnitskaya’s account of the story or not, we now know that Trump Jr. went into the meeting believing that destructive information would be made available to him from those working with the Russian government. This appears to be attempted collusion at the very least.
The next question the media should ask is whether or not the Trump campaign was able to get such information from this meeting, and if not, did they take another route to try and obtain such information by other means? At the very least, this interview has shed additional light on the drive that the Trump campaign had for digging up dirt on Clinton and the DNC.
