Earlier this morning we published a story in which James Comey confidant, Benjamin Wittes, hinted that there will be two major stories regarding the Trump/Russia investigation breaking later in the day. Well, it appears as if the first of those two stories has just broke, thanks to the hard working journalists over at NBC.
According to reports from NBC, notes that Paul Manafort took during the infamous May 9th Trump Tower meeting with Jared Kushner, Donald Trump Jr. and multiple Russian associates have leaked, and the contents of those notes are quite earth-shattering.
The notes taken by Paul Manafort on his smartphone during his meeting with the Russians, in the middle of last year “included the word ‘donations’ near a reference to the Republican National Committee,” NBC reported after speaking with two sources briefed on evidence from the investigation.
The notes, which the sources desribed as ‘cryptic’ were turned over recently to the House and Senate intelligence committees as well as Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Manafort, who was Trump’s campaign manager at the time of the meeting, had his home raided last month and continues to be a central figure in multiple investigations related to the Trump Campaign’s possible collusion with Russia.
The acceptance of donations from a foreign government would clearly be a crime, which would violate campaign finance laws. And while we have yet to see direct evidence of such actions, the fact that the notes included the word ‘donations’ while referencing the RNC, seems to implicate more than just the President and his campaign in all of this. It will be interesting to see if Mueller, as well as the House and Senate intelligence committees, expand the scope of their investigations to include other members of the Republican Party, if they have not already done so.
As for Benjamin Wittes’ cryptic tweets this morning, he has just admitted that this NBC story is only half of what’s to come today.
“They always travel together. They are a bonded pair. That said, as @adamgoldmanNYT might say, the day is young,” Wittes tweeted moments ago.
Let’s hear your thoughts on this breaking story in the comments section below. I also urge you all to be prepared for another bombshell, perhaps later this afternoon or into this evening.
