Alphabet Inc (GOOG) has stated today that they will be investing a sum of $600 million in a new datacenter, its 15th such global center, in Montgomery County, Tenn. The new datacenter willl use the existing infrastructure in place, which was once a semiconductor plant. Alphabet Inc (GOOG) will also be working with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to eventually bring the new facility up to 100% renewable energy as its power source.
“Thanks to an arrangement with TVA, we’ll be able to scout new renewable energy projects and work with them to bring that power onto their electrical grid; another step toward Google’s ultimate goal of being powered by 100% renewable energy,” Google stated.
The new facility seems like it will be a boon for the local area, employing approximately 70 people to begin with and expanding from there. Google has also stated that they will be working with the community to provide grants for clean energy, science, internet access, and tech education. The stock decreased 0.25% or $1.91 during the last trading session, hitting $748.4. Approximately 2,013 shares traded hands. GOOG shares have risen 38.56% since May 22, 2015 and are currently uptrending. It has outperformed the S&P500 by 41.62%.
