Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has acquired a startup company called Flyby Media, further confirming signs that they plan to release some sort of virtual reality device/headset in the future. Flyby Media specializes in developing technology that allows for the mapping of spaces using smartphones. This is just one of the few virtual reality related acquisitions by Apple in recent months. They have previously acquired Faceshift and Metaio.

While much is still up in the air in respect how Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) plans to use this technology, the Financial Times reports that the company is working on creating a virtual reality headset of some sorts. Undoubtedly a headset won’t replace current iPhones or iPads, but they could very well compliment them. Certainly any new product would probably be at least 1-2 years away from actually coming to market, but Apple could stand to make a huge impact in the world of virtual and augmented reality.

Apple did not confirm any particular projects:

“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” an Apple spokesperson told VentureBeat.
