Virtual reality is hear to stay. That’s at least the case if pre-order sales of Sony’s Playstation VR headset are any indication of the pent up demand for this technology. Yesterday afternoon at GDC Sony announced key specs as well as a $399 price point and planned launch date of their highly anticipated virtual reality headset. Soon after the announcement Amazon UK began accepting pre-orders for the device. Within just seven minutes Amazon’s entire allocated stock of the Playstation VR headsets had sold out.
“Based on our initial allocation we cannot guarantee release day delivery if you ordered after 11:45 GMT, Wednesday 16 March, 2016,” a statement on Amazon UK’s PlayStation VR project page now reads. “You will be notified via email of the expected delivery date closer to the time. We will be fulfilling customer orders in the order in which they were placed.”
Despite this rather bleak news for those hoping to pre-order the headset yesterday, Amazon UK is still making the device available for pre-order but can no longer guarantee that it will be shipped immediately following the October launch date. While we doubt that those who pre-order the device now will have to wait too much longer than the original wave of pre-orders will, there is no telling for sure how long the wait will be. It is also unclear as to how many headsets Amazon UK had been allocated by Sony to offer up.
While Amazon is no stranger of quick sellouts, this has to be one of the fastest products to reach the ‘sold out’ status in quite some time. We knew that the demand for Playstation VR would be incredibly high, but could not have predicted the low price-point of $399 that Sony announced yesterday. This drove demand up even further, likely surprising even those within the company. I’m fairly sure that Sony will have plenty of supply available come October, and there should not be a problem with gamers getting the device in time for the holiday season.
