New Details Emerge — ‘Playstation 4.5’ or ‘PS 4K’ to Launch Before PS VR

A couple of weeks ago we did a story pertaining to rumors related to Sony’s plans for a new Playstation console,  Well, over the course of the last several days, new rumors have emerged and industry chatter has erupted in an all-out media frenzy.  It now seems very likely that a new Playstation console, dubbed the ‘Playstation 4.5’ or ‘Playstation 4K’, will be unveiled sometime this year.

Sony themselves admitted that their highly anticipated Playstation VR headset would likely fall behind the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive when it comes to performance and graphics.  This is simply because the PS VR will be required to run of a somewhat dated console, the Playstation 4, while the other two main headsets are built to work on personal computers, which can be upgraded.  While industry analysts expected the low price of the PS VR to appeal to a large portion of the gaming crowd despite it’s possible performance shortcomings, an updated Playstation 4 console that’s capable of handling 4K video, and better graphics could be key to Sony blowing away the competition within the VR space over the long run.

According to a report this week from the Wall Street Journal, “Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power. Though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog.”

The Wall Street Journal also believes that any such updated console would be released prior to the October launch of the Playstation VR headset.  In fact many within the industry now believe that the PS VR could first be unveiled at E3 2016 in late June.  This would allow Sony to launch the console likely in September.  Although the PS 4.5 or PS 4K may be overlooked by some of the less hardcore Playstation 4 owners, the new console would be perfect for those without a PS 4, who may be looking to purchase a PS VR for the holidays.  Certainly if Sony does take this path, which seems very likely at this point, it would be pretty hard for the other headset developers to temp gamers to purchase their product when a brand new ‘Playstation 4.5’ along with a PS Vr headset can be purchased for close to the same price as the HTC Vive (without a computer).
