It’s been ten years since Will Smith’s last album “Lost And Found” was released. He’s been out of the music business since then, instead pursuing his goal of becoming a major player in the movie industry. His greatest box office success came with his role as Agent J in the “Men In Black” trilogy.
Now, the Fresh Prince is back.
Smith, 46, has lent his amazing vocal presence to a remix of the song “Fiesta” by Colombian dance group Bomba Estéreo, released October 2. The up-tempo track spans just over three minutes, and on it he displays a previously unseen talent by rapping in both English and Spanish.
The video of the “Fiesta” remix has racked up hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube. But whether it’s a welcome sign of the long-hoped-for and rumored Will Smith comeback remains to be seen.
Earlier this year, Smith hinted that he might be ready to rejoin the music world after revealing that he hit the studio with Kanye West to work on new tracks.
“I went into the studio with Kanye. I’m thinking about it. I’m exploring,” Smith said while promoting his film Focus in February. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet, but I’m exploring. I’m in a creative ceiling. My son tells me I have to write out the things I don’t like. I can’t write and stop – I have to keep going and going and write them out. I’ve never worked like that before, but I think I might give that a shot.”
Smith teased a “Fiesta” collaboration last month when he posted a selfie with the group on Facebook to congratulate them for receiving multiple nominations at the upcoming Latin Grammys.
“Hola mamacita / Go get me a beer-a / The track is the heat / I couldn’t let the beat go by without a feature,” Smith raps in his first new verse in a decade. Later on the remix, he boasts “No gasoline, I’m a Tesla / Teach game, sensei, professor,” name-checks actress Sofia Vergara and refers to himself as “the Fresh one”.
“When I was told that Will Smith wanted to collaborate on a remix with Bomba, I couldn’t believe it,” Bomba Estéreo’s founder/multi-instrumentalist Simón Mejia said in a statement. “This opportunity to work with Will was beyond anything we have dreamed of. It’s not a traditional featuring – it’s just magic. We all had a blast together at the video shoot, and we want to thank Will for being so warm and such a pleasure to work with … and for rapping in Spanish!”
