Godzilla and Kong Coming to Three New Films As Two Studios Join Forces

It had to happen.

Godzilla! King Kong! Rodan! Mothra! King Ghidorah! Together!

There’s a great pent-up demand for all of these cinematic legends, and what better way to fill it than to bring out more films. So now Legendary Entertainment, owner of the King Kong character, has joined forces with Warner Bros. Entertainment and Godzilla to create a brand new franchise devoted to those two stalwarts and a zoo of other super-species.

When Legendary announced new films for Godzilla and Kong, fans all over the world speculated these two characters might one day meet. And sure enough, Legendary’s CEO, Thomas Tull, along with Kevin Tsujihara, Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros., just announced a trio of new releases: “Kong: Skull Island”, set for 2017, “Godzilla 2”, arriving in 2018, and…yes…”Godzilla vs. Kong”, the long-awaited meeting, hitting theaters in 2020.

And, as revealed at Comic-Con 2014, classic Toho monsters including King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan may pop up as well.

The common thread in all three films will be the ongoing mission of Monarch, the multi-national organization of creature seekers that found Godzilla in the 2014 epic.

Legendary will maintain its home at Universal Pictures. And the Godzilla releases remain in partnership with Warner Bros., who will now also distribute King Kong under the new agreement. Production on “Kong: Skull Island” is scheduled to begin on October 19th.

“Audiences really responded to Godzilla,” stated Tull. “Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.”

“Working with our partners at Legendary, we enjoyed tremendous creative and commercial success with `Godzilla,’” said Tsujihara. “It’s great to be able to revisit these characters and help create a franchise with so many creative possibilities for filmmakers. Fans love these big, globally iconic films and it doesn’t get any bigger than this.”
