Many may recall the first meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. It was an event that saw Emmanuel show absolutely no intimidation of Trump, as he grasped the U.S. President’s hand firmly and then even hesitated in letting go. This was seen as though Macron was saying, “You don’t control me!” in a friendly yet firm manner.
Recently, at the French Bastille Day Parade in Paris, many onlookers noticed quite a strange exchange that took place between President Trump, President Macron and the two First Ladies. Trump and Macron shook hands, but the handshake lingered for approximately 30 seconds and even encompassed Trump kissing Brigitte Macron while still holding Emmanuel’s hand (see video below).
When questioned about Macron by the New York Times, Trump had some great things to say about him, but he also made some very odd remarks concerning “holding hands” with the French President.
“He’s a great guy. Smart. Strong. Loves holding my hand,” Trump told the New York Times, before later repeating the same point in saying, “People don’t realize he loves holding my hand. And that’s good, as far as that goes.”
Then later in the interview, he repeated his feeling again, saying, “I mean, really. He’s a very good person. And a tough guy, but look, he has to be. I think he is going to be a terrific president of France. But he does love holding my hand.”
It’s no secret that Trump loves it when people compliment him and make him feel “special”. Perhaps it’s hand holding that makes Trump feel most appreciated. After all, his own wife seems to stray away from doing so.
